{"id":83171,"date":"2024-07-01T15:54:59","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T15:54:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/?p=83171"},"modified":"2024-12-23T14:36:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-23T14:36:19","slug":"fast-favorites-no-place-like-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/blog\/from-the-collection\/fast-favorites-no-place-like-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Fast Favorites: No Place Like Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In this series, museum volunteers share brief insights into their favorite NMWA collection works. &nbsp;Hear from docent Jayne Beline about her favorite paintings, sculptures, and photographs that all connect to the idea of \u201chome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong><em>Arreau, Hautes-Pyr\u00e9n\u00e9es<\/em> (1949)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time I look at <a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/art\/collection\/arreau-hautes-pyrenees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this colorful painting<\/a> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/art\/artists\/lois-mailou-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lo\u00efs Mailou Jones<\/a><\/strong> (1905\u20131998), I find myself smiling while focusing on a different part of the beautiful French landscape. As an African American artist, Mailou Jones felt at home in France, specifically Paris, where she was treated with respect and her art was appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2559\" height=\"2116\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2559px) 100vw, 2559px\" src=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/1990.28_Art-Camera.jpg\" alt=\"Beneath a soft blue sky, a picturesque village nestles in a valley between a river in the extreme foreground and verdant mountains. Payne; \u00a9 Lo\u00efs Mailou Jones Pierre-Noel Trust; Photo by Lee Stalsworth<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. <em>Figure (Merryn)<\/em> (1962)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Merryn, located in Cornwall, England, is a place that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/art\/artists\/barbara-hepworth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Barbara Hepworth<\/a><\/strong> (1903\u20131975) called home. I appreciate that <a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/art\/collection\/merryn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this alabaster sculpture<\/a> recalls the rolling landscape of this area, and I can envision a human form frolicking through the countryside. Hepworth, who wanted to be a sculptor from the time she was a young child, used direct carving to create this sinuous work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3.<em> Iris, Tulips, Jonquils, and Crocuses<\/em> (1969)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/art\/artists\/alma-woodsey-thomas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alma Woodsey Thomas<\/a><\/strong> (1891\u20131978) is one of my favorite artists. Her home was located on 15th street here in Washington, D.C. When I look at this painting, I see the flowers almost dancing and blowing in the wind. I imagine that Thomas gazed out her window and into her garden for inspiration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 828px) 100vw, 828px\" src=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/1986.323.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract painting composed of brightly colored, lozenge-shaped brushstrokes in vertical stripes of navy, purple, turqouise, yellow, orange and red. The overall effect is as if the painting was collaged out of torn pieces of paper, with the white of the canvas showing through.\" class=\"wp-image-2439\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Alma Woodsey Thomas, <em>Iris, Tulips, Jonquils, and Crocuses<\/em>, 1969; Acrylic on canvas, 60 x 50 in.; National Museum of Women in the Arts, Gift of Wallace and Wilhelmina Holladay; \u00a9 2024 Estate of Alma Thomas (Courtesy of the Hart Family)\/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York; Photo by Lee Stalsworth for NMWA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. <em>Plaid Houses (Maquettes) <\/em>(2005\u201311)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201cplaid\u201d in this work\u2019s title is a reference to the 15th century Scottish Gaelic word for blanket (plaide). <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/blog\/artist-spotlight\/5-fast-facts-laure-tixier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Laure Tixier<\/a><\/strong> (b. 1972) uses felt and other natural materials to highlight ideas of habitat, architecture, and city planning. Her maquettes depict homes from around the world, and they bring back my childhood memories of little miniature houses positioned under our Christmas tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"443\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"https:\/\/nmwa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/2014.3.1-9-1-e1588125748449-1024x443.jpg\" alt=\"Arrangement of nine small, felt houses on a white table.
